I’ve had a great year! I’m very grateful to have experienced small personal progress artistically with my first play performed as a play reading with actors under the professional guidance of a director, then I had another poem published in an art and literature journal and I was lucky to see one of my microfiction showcased on the GOA digital network on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
I was also fortunate enough to have a panel submission accepted to explore mental health and wellbeing in the arts. I enjoyed organising and facilitating a panel of artists for artists and the wider community at OZ Comic Con exploring the subject of mental health and wellbeing. Then behind the scenes, with my writing work, I managed to complete a few more manuscripts, poems and short stories.
HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported me in some way this year. I am most grateful to you all.
Outside the artistic arena, I completed another diploma now holding two great diplomas in counselling and community services. I also completed lots of courses for my cpd (continued professional development) completing more training in the field of aod (alcohol and other drugs) and mental health.
I celebrate those little successes and also those little failures. And I did have many rejections in the writing arena. I believe as artists and professionals in any field we need to experience success and failure. Both success and failure deliver a balance between our growth and each one encourages us to practise our resilience and courage to keep trying. My next goal is to finish a Bachelor of Social Welfare. I am deeply interested in social welfare, as most of you know, I have been volunteering in the field of homelessness and several other areas in drug abuse and social services for many years now. I also believe in working and experiencing the frontline services for myself so I have a full well-rounded understanding of what is happening in our society.
As the year closes I believe it’s good to celebrate the small successes and failures. It’s certainly not about likes or dislikes or social status for most of us. It’s about recognising our hard work and dedication to participating in life.
This year I hope to continue to produce different storylines that may not necessarily be for mainstream reading or viewing but hopefully, they will be received with some interest.
As artists, it’s important to keep trying to push the boundaries of our storytelling to produce something new and inspiring for the world. As professionals in any field, it’s important to listen, to be open to using new innovation and include empathy and kindness in our everyday interactions with our work colleagues and the wider community.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! 2018 will be a great year!
So until next time… “Be brave and bold in your chosen field of creativity. And never be afraid to explore new techniques”
